Hi there,
I haven't looked at MPV in a while, but some people I trust recently
compared and said that madVR is still on top (for now), although MPV
seems to be getting close. Do you have a different opinion?
I haven't looked into Dolby Vision yet because my main focus is on the
Envy hardware product atm, and I don't think we can implement support
for Dolby Vision in our hardware device without having a license.
Maybe we will get a license at some point, but even if we do, I'm not
even sure if our hardware device will see the RPU layer/metadata
directly. The Envy receives signals via HDMI, and I think those
signals are already "transformed" into something else by the Dolby
Vision compatible player. Though I'm not 100% sure about how it all
works exactly. In any case, I may look at RPU at some point in the
future, but it doesn't have a high priority at the moment.
Your report about "histogram-based dynamic mapping in MPV" sounds like
you think that MPV looks better than madVR now? That doesn't match
what I've heard from other people. Do you have some links that talk
about what MPV does exactly? Maybe some screenshots that show how MPV
looks better than madVR?
Best regards, Mathias/madshi.
